For more than a decade, we have been building the technology that powers real-money, skill-based mobile competition. That work began at Skillz Inc. and continues today through Skillz Platform, fueled by FIRY.
Our founder and CEO, Andrew Paradise, is a named inventor on many of the portfolio’s foundational patents, reflecting the hands-on role he has played in developing this technology from the beginning.
Today, our portfolio includes more than 90 issued patents and over 110 pending applications, the majority of which trace back to the platform Skillz built. These patents are more than numbers. They represent the complex challenges we solved to create an experience where players can compete with confidence.
What’s Inside FIRY’s Patent Portfolio
Our patent portfolio spans six core areas, each supporting a different part of delivering fair, secure, real-money competition at scale.
Rating and Matching Technology
Fair competition starts with bringing together players at comparable skill levels. Our rating and matching patents cover technology that evaluates player skill and creates balanced matchups, helping ensure that results are driven by performance.
This is what brings the idea of skill-based competition to life, giving both new and experienced players the opportunity to find matches that feel competitive and fair.
Tournament Infrastructure
Operating one competition is relatively straightforward. Supporting thousands of real-money tournaments at the same time requires technology designed for scale. Our tournament infrastructure patents cover systems that help competitions launch, run, and resolve reliably, including during periods of high activity.
Identity and Payments
Trust is essential whenever real money is involved. Our identity and payments patents cover technology that helps verify players and securely move funds into and out of the platform. Most players may never see these systems at work, but they are an important part of creating a dependable experience.
Fraud Prevention and Competitive Integrity
Maintaining fair competition requires systems that can identify suspicious activity and respond quickly. Our patents in this area cover technology designed to detect cheating, prevent collusion, and protect the integrity of each competition, helping ensure that outcomes reflect player skill.
Backend Infrastructure
Every competition, result, and transaction depends on a reliable technical foundation. Our backend infrastructure patents cover systems that help the platform operate consistently and efficiently across a large, active player base.
Player Marketing
Great competition begins with helping players discover the right experiences. Our player marketing patents cover technology that connects players with relevant competitions and keeps them engaged over time.
Our Patents Have Proven to be Enforceable
Building a new category meant solving problems the gaming industry had not faced before. When Skillz set out to create a platform where players could compete for real money based on skill, our team had to rethink everything from fair matchmaking and secure payments to platform integrity.
Those solutions became the foundation of the Skillz platform. Each patent protects a specific part of the technology we built to make skill-based competition fair, secure, and scalable for players and developers.
Protecting fair competition also means taking action when others infringe on our work. In February 2024, a jury found that rival AviaGames had willfully infringed on one of our patents and awarded us $42.9 million. Months later, the two companies reached an $80 million settlement.
Our patents are enforceable, and we will protect the technology we have built.
Building What’s Next
Our patent portfolio reflects more than a decade of work by Andrew and the team to build real-money, skill-based competition responsibly. From fair matchmaking and secure payments to fraud prevention, each patent represents a challenge we addressed to create a platform that players and partners can trust.
And the work continues. As skill-based competition evolves, we will continue developing technology that makes the experience fairer, safer, and more engaging. To learn more about FIRY and our approach to innovation, visit our Investor Relations or About page.
